ReCiPe Impact Categories

TotalView characterises every lifecycle emission with the ReCiPe 2016 (Hierarchist) method — the international consensus successor to ReCiPe 2008, maintained by RIVM, Radboud University, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, and PRé Sustainability. Hierarchist is the default perspective: a 100-year time horizon for climate impacts and the consensus assumption set for contested factors, balancing the optimistic (Individualist) and precautionary (Egalitarian) extremes.

ReCiPe is two layers: ~18 midpoint indicators (problem-oriented — acidification, eutrophication, particulate matter, …) that aggregate into 3 endpoint damages (Human Health, Ecosystem Quality, Resource Scarcity). TotalView reports both — totals at the endpoint level for headline reporting, and the midpoint breakdown so you can see what is driving a result.

EndpointUnit reportedWhat one unit means
Human HealthDALYsOne year of healthy life lost (WHO Disability-Adjusted Life Year)
Ecosystem QualityPDFsFractional species disappearance integrated over area × time (ReCiPe’s species·yr)
Resource ScarcityUSD 2013Marginal cost of extracting the next unit of a scarce resource, in 2013 dollars

Each line is a midpoint category returned in summary_json.Impacts.* under the field Impact_Category. Categories are grouped by the endpoint they roll up into.

Impact_CategoryDrives DALYs via
CarbonClimate-change-driven heat stress, malnutrition, vector-borne disease, and storm/flood mortality
Particulate MatterRespiratory and cardiovascular mortality from PM2.5 exposure
Human Toxicity (Cancerous)Cancer incidence from carcinogenic emissions to air, water, and soil
Human Toxicity (Non-Cancerous)Non-cancer disease burden from toxic chemical exposure
Photochemical Oxidant (Public Health)Respiratory damage from ground-level ozone formation
Ionising RadiationCancer and hereditary disease from radioactive emissions across the fuel cycle
Ozone DepletionUV-driven skin cancer and cataracts from stratospheric ozone loss
Water DepletionHealth impacts of freshwater scarcity (malnutrition, sanitation)
Impact_CategoryDrives PDFs via
CarbonClimate-change-driven species loss in freshwater and terrestrial systems
Terrestrial AcidificationPlant and soil-fauna loss from acid deposition (SO₂, NOₓ, NH₃)
Freshwater EutrophicationAquatic species loss from phosphorus enrichment (algal blooms, hypoxia)
Marine EutrophicationCoastal species loss from nitrogen enrichment (dead zones)
Freshwater EcotoxicityToxic chemical impacts on river and lake ecosystems
Marine EcotoxicityToxic chemical impacts on ocean ecosystems
Terrestrial EcotoxicityToxic chemical impacts on soil and terrestrial species
Photochemical Oxidants (Ecosystems)Vegetation damage from ground-level ozone
Land UseAvoided ecosystem occupation and transformation from fossil mining and drilling
Water DepletionSpecies loss from aquatic and terrestrial water-table drawdown
Impact_CategoryDrives USD via
Energy Resources: Non-Renewable, FossilMarginal extraction-cost increase as fossil reserves are drawn down
Material Resources: Metals/MineralsMarginal extraction-cost increase as ore grades decline

Alongside Impacts.*, every result also carries an Emissions.* block — the characterised inventory in tonne / m³ equivalents, before it has been translated to DALYs / PDFs / USD. This is what an ISO 14044 LCI looks like post-characterisation: each midpoint indicator expressed in its reference substance (CO₂-Eq for climate change, PM2.5-Eq for particulate matter, SO₂-Eq for acidification, etc.), grouped by environmental compartment.

Each row below is a line item returned in Emissions.Cradle_to_Grave_Analysis.{air|soil|water|resource}[].

NameUnitDefines
CarbonTonnes CO₂-EqGreenhouse gases weighted by 100-yr global warming potential
Particulate MatterTonnes PM2.5-EqPrimary and secondary fine-particle formation (PM2.5 equivalent)

Human Toxicity (Non-Cancerous)Tonnes 1,4-DCB-EqNon-carcinogenic toxic substances, same reference compound
Photochemical Oxidants (Public Health)Tonnes NOₓ-EqGround-level ozone precursors, health route
Photochemical Oxidants (Ecosystems)Tonnes NOₓ-EqSame precursors, weighted for vegetation damage
Ionising RadiationMBq Co-60-EqRadioactive isotope releases normalised to cobalt-60
Ozone DepletionTonnes CFC-11-EqStratospheric-ozone-depleting substances vs trichlorofluoromethane

Terrestrial AcidificationTonnes SO₂-EqAcidifying air pollutants depositing to soil (SO₂, NOₓ, NH₃)
Terrestrial EcotoxicityTonnes 1,4-DCB-EqToxic substances reaching terrestrial systems

Marine EcotoxicityTonnes 1,4-DCB-EqToxic substances reaching the ocean

The resource compartment is not an emissions release — it tracks net use of finite stocks (fossil fuels, ores, land, water). The first two are normalised to reference resources; land and water are reported in their native physical units rather than tonnes.

NameUnitDefines
Energy Resources: Non-Renewable, FossilTonnes oil-EqNet fossil-fuel use, normalised to crude oil energy content
Material Resources: Metals/MineralsTonnes Cu-EqNet metal/mineral use, normalised to copper extraction scarcity
Land Useannual m² crop-EqLand occupation and transformation avoided when fossil extraction backs off
Water Usem³Net freshwater withdrawal across the life cycle
  • The full lifecycle result returned by GET /projects/{id}/results carries:
    • Impacts.Cradle_to_Grave_Analysis.Public_Health[], Biodiversity[], and Economic[] — characterised damages (DALYs / PDFs / USD), one element per midpoint from the impact tables.
    • Emissions.Cradle_to_Grave_Analysis.{air, soil, water, resource}[] — characterised inventory in tonne/m³ equivalents, one element per line item from the emissions tables.
  • The same midpoints appear inside every period of the time-series endpoints (/impacts/time-series, /impacts/hourly, /impacts/daily).
  • Endpoint totals are pre-aggregated as Impacts.Cradle_to_Grave_Analysis.Total.{DALYs,PDFs,USD}.

A single carbon number can hide trade-offs — a battery project may displace gas combustion (a Public Health win) while drawing on lithium extraction (a Resource Scarcity cost). Reporting all 18 ReCiPe midpoints means the trade-off is visible in the same response, not buried in a footnote.

  • LCIA Results — how the response is structured and what positive/negative values mean
  • Methodology — how displaced generation is determined before characterisation
  • API Reference — exact response schemas
